Ayers Rock
Ayers Rock or Uluru as it is known to the local Aborigines, is a large sandstone rock located in Northern Territory, Australia. Ayers Rock is a sacred symbol to the Aborigines, and has been for tens of thousands of years. Over 400,000 tourists visit Ayers Rock every year, over fifty percent of which are from overseas. Around a quarter of visitors choose to climb the 347 meter rock, but some of the less enerjetic, choose just to walk around the 9.5 kilometer perimeter. The nearest town to Ayers Rock is Alice Springs which lies 445 kilometers to the southwest and most visitors start their journey from here, either by a guided coach trip or by hire car. As Ayers Rock is so isolated (it's over 2000km to Sydney!) the majority of visitors fly to Alice Springs or directly to Ayers Rock Resort. A flight from Cairns or Sydney will take appoximatly 3 hours whilst a flight from Darwin would take around 2. |
